Mexico City's historic center, known as the Centro histórico is one of the spots that all visitors to city should aim to explore.
There you can find El Zócalo the main square of the city, with the Cathedral, the Presidential Palace and very close to the Templo Mayor the remains of the main pyramid of Tenochtitlán and its museum.
Other interesting landmarks in the historic center are El Palacio de Bellas Artes, One of the most beutiful and recognisable buildings of Mexico City and Plaza Garibaldi where you will find mariachis offering up songs for a fee (just be careful in the area after dark).
Chapultepec Park is one of the must-see of the city and it is very close from de apartment. There you can enjoy Chapultepec Castle (that is also the National History Museum), the National Museum of Anthropology (the most visited museum in Mexico City), the lake, the hammocks zone and even the zoo (that it is free, by the way).
Coyoacán is a beutiful typically Mexican neighborhood with many museums, cafés and bookstores. There you will find La Casa Azul (the Museum of Frida Kahlo), el mercado de Coyoacán and los viveros de Coyoacán, as well as take a walk around its picturesque streets.
San Ángel neighborhood is specially recommended in a Saturday, since you will find El bazar del Sábado (the Saturday bazaar) that showcases some of Mexico's best handcrafted jewelry, woodwork, ceramics and textiles. Artists and artisans also display their work in Plaza San Jacinto itself and in adjacent Plaza Tenanitla.
Also in San Ángel don't miss the Museo Casa Estudio to see the art studio of the famous Mexican artist and muralist, Diego Rivera.
Teotihuacán archaeological site is one of Mexico's most popular day trip destinations from Mexico City. There are several optiones to get there:
- You can go by bus. Buses depart from Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte. You can get there by Uber or by Metro (Line 1 Chapultepec-Balderas / Line 3 Balderas - La Raza / Line 5 La Raza - Autobuses del Norte). It takes around half an hour (either by subway or by Uber). There is a very good explanation here.
- We also have another option: Jorge Maass (+52 1 55 3248 1486), a family friend, can drive you there and give you a very complete tour (he charges $1,500 MXN, around $80 USD, including the lift).
Take a tour through Xochimilco canals in the trajineras!
You can get there by Uber (look for the address Embarcadero Nuevo Nativitas Xochimilco).
Here you have a few tips to get there and a little bit of what trajineras are.
Also, if you're looking for a closer to nature experience you can visit the chinampas (floating gardens) by trajinera as well. You can buy all organic, locally grown products at the market too here.
